Getting Started with Target for ArcGIS

This Getting Started with Target for ArcGIS lesson introduces you to the Target for ArcGIS system, an integrated software system that provides you with a subsurface 3D viewer, grid utilities, quality control tools, planning tools and visualization and plotting tools.

This lesson will demonstrate how to set up your Seequent ID, install the Target for ArcGIS software and display the Target for ArcGIS toolbars.

Geosoft provides sample data for you to use when working through these lessons. These data files, if downloaded during the install, can be found in your "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Geosoft\Desktop Applications 9\data\geochemistry" folder.

Target for ArcGIS

In mineral exploration, the initial focus of any exploration program is to identify potential targets for drilling. After potential targets are determined, the project moves into a "proving" phase led by a geologist experienced in obtaining and interpreting drillhole data. A complete drilling program will acquire many types of data ranging from hole location (i.e. collar details), surveys (i.e. 3-Dimensional orientation), geologic rock types and descriptions, drill hole geochemical assays, and borehole geophysical logs.

To set the stage for a successful subsurface data acquisition program, the geologist requires knowledge and experience plus effective tools that facilitate organization, planning and most importantly, visualization and plotting of data in 3 dimensions. A 3-dimensional perspective is essential to evaluating geologic structure of mineralized and host rocks as well as determining the continuity of host and mineralized rocks. In this context, drill programs rely on surface plan maps and subsurface cross-section maps to acquire the 3-D perspective required to prove potential targets.

The Target for ArcGIS system was developed to provide the geologist with:

Seequent Connector and Seequent ID

Seequent Connector is a service required by the Target for ArcGIS application. Geosoft users sign in securely with their Seequent ID, using Seequent Connector, to access any online service including our new Seequent ID based licensing, online updates, VOXI Earth Modelling subscriptions, online support resources through My Seequent, and Azure Maps services. Seequent Connector enables you to sign in from your desktop when you are connected to the Internet or via email.

As a customer, your Seequent ID is all you need to remember when accessing your Geosoft licensed software, subscriptions, services, resources, and community activities on My Seequent.

To learn more about Seequent ID visit https://www.seequent.com/help-support/seequent-id.

Create your Seequent ID

Your Seequent ID is your business email address. Along with your password, Seequent ID will provide access to MySeequent, the gateway to an integrated and connected environment where users seamlessly share, save, and collaborate. This secure user portal will give you tailored access to all the information you need, ranging from knowledge base articles to product downloads and access to a community of fellow users.

Your Seequent ID is the only sign in you need to remember when accessing Geosoft licensed software and online services, including online updates, online support resources, VOXI Earth Modelling, and Azure Maps services.

To Create a Seequent ID:

  1. Connect to the internet and open a browser (note that Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported).

  2. Go to MySeequent (https://my.seequent.com) web page.

  3. Enter your information as required and then click Create an ID.

  4. Once you have registered, the Seequent ID Service will immediately send you an activation link to the email address you provided (within 20 minutes).

  5. When you receive the activation email, click the Click to Activate link. Your Seequent ID will be activated.

Installing Target for ArcGIS

Target for ArcGIS is installed from the Geosoft DVD or from a downloaded executable. Please note that your installation procedure will vary slightly depending on the operating system you are using.

Once you have successfully installed, you can begin working with Geosoft’s Target for ArcGIS software application.

Installing Target for ArcGIS

  1. Either insert the Geosoft DVD into your DVD-ROM drive, or run the downloaded executable. The setup dialog is displayed asking you to sign-in with your Seequent ID and if you do not have one, to create one.

  2. Then, if you had a previous version of the software installed, you will be asked to convert your license key to your Seequent ID. Enter your License Key. Click Convert. Your License key will be converted to your Seequent ID, which is all you will now need to access your Geosoft products and online services.

  3. You will then be asked to select the Licensed Applications and Additional Options to install.

  4. Select the software to install and click Next. The Ready to install dialog appears.

  5. This dialog provides you with the license agreement and privacy policy information. Once you have read this information, click Accept and install. Your software will be installed.

  6. When the Installation complete dialog is displayed, you can check the boxes provided to launch Target for ArcGIS, view the release notes and create desktop shortcut.

  7. Click the Close button to complete the installation process.

Displaying Target for ArcGIS Toolbars

Once you have installed the Geosoft Extensions for ArcGIS software and opened ArcMap , you will need to display the Geosoft Target for ArcGIS toolbars; Geosoft Extensions Setup and Seeker, Geosoft Database, Target Surface and Target Drillhole. The toolbars can then be docked in suitable locations.

To Display the Target for ArcGIS Toolbars

  1. Start ArcMap.

  2. On the Customize menu, select Toolbars.

  3. Select Geosoft Extensions Setup and Seeker. The Geosoft Extensions Setup and Seeker toolbar will be displayed.

  4. Repeat Step 2 above with the corresponding selection to display the Geosoft Database, Target Drillhole, Target Surface and Target Wireframing toolbars.

  5. The Geosoft Target for ArcGIS toolbars can then be docked in the ArcMap menu area (top, bottom or sides) by dragging each toolbar and dropping them at the desired location.
